The above Belchamber crest was granted to a unknown Belchamber, there is no record to which family it belongs.
I`m glad you drop in,this is my family history.and these are my ancestors:
From yeoman farmers to Agricultural labourers and beyond
The Early Belchambers of Northchapel,Sussex

The Northchapel Connection
My l2th grandparents were Robert and Margery Payne from Northchapel.Robert born circa 1475 was a Yeoman Farmer he married Margery?? and they had a daughter Agnes my 11th grandmother. Robert and Margery lived on Garlands Farm in Northchapel; Robert died in circa 1551 and was buried in the Chancel of Chapel, Northchapel, West Sussex. In 1547 Robert surrended Garlands to to his grandson Robert Belchamber, provided he gives a room to John and Agnes Belchamber, his parents and 10 shillings a year.
John Belchamber my 11~ GP was born in Northchapel in the mid to late 1400`s he died 1550
He married Agnes Payne they had four children James, Sybil, Roger and Robert the youngest who was heir to his grandfather, Robert Payne.John made a will in 1550 leaving Agnes his wife as Executrix. Agnes died in 1561. Robert Belchamber my 10 th GP born early 1500’s was a yeoman farmer he married Margerie, Robert obtained copyhold of Garlands in 1547 as the heir of Robert Payne. From the Petworth Manor Court Rolls in 1550 Robert was ordered to make a ditch and fence against the property of Stephen Holwey, and in 1565 he was ordered to repair his house and barn, Robert was fined 12 shillings for failing to do this. In 1571 Robert surrenders out of court land called Shonks part of Garlands, to be regranted to his son John Belchamber.Robert died in 1571 and Margerie was admitted to her bench. Next heir is his son Robert; the custom of Petworth Manor was that the youngest son became heir, a custom known as “Borough English”. Roberts Will is in all probability lost, it is not listed in the Archives of the West Sussex Record Office.Robert and Margerie’s children were John, Jane. Margaret, Joanne and Robert the heir. Margerie would have taken her place in the manor court until her son was of age. In the 1575 survey she is noted as a widow occupying lands called Garlands, A tenement and orchard. She died in 1582 at Garlands leaving a will, her son Robert as executor.Their daughter Margaret married Rafe Grey on the 7th September,1589 at St.Nicholas`Church Guildford,Surrey.
Robert was born mid 1500's at Garlands and was also a Yeoman Farmer and my 9 th GP he married Constance Goodier the 1610 survey shows Robert occupying Garlands ,80 acres.Robert died in 1612 and left a will,Constance his wife was executrix. At this time Northchapel was a hamlet in the Petworth Parish, and events should have been entered in the Petworth Registors but were not.The Chapel must have kept its own registors but these are lost.We have only to rely on the Bishops Transcipts,a yearly retum by the parish priest to the bishop, and only some of these have come to light.Northchapel became a parish in 1716. Constance died in 1621 and left a will.John the youngest son is heir of house to copyhold lands.Son Richard is executor. Robert and Constances Children were Rose,Robert,Henry, Richard,Edward,Thomas,William and John all born at Garlands. The Children: Rose married Ralph Constable and they moved to Kirdford, all there children were born there as far as I can tell. Two of Rose's brothers may have also moved to Kirdford as they feature in the parish records there(Edward and William). Her fathers will 1612 states that six of his sons should receive an equal share of his goods and that Rose should receive 20 shillings from each of them, she also received from her mothers will ”my best feather bed,my payne ofsheets, all my wearing apparel,a coverlet, Payre of blankets,a boulster and pillow and 60 Shillings". Ralph and Rose had these children baptisted at Kirdford Richard 26 June 1601,Robert ? 1608,Jane 28 Feb.l615,William 10 April 1618,Francis 5 Dec.l619,Elizabeth 20 Feb 1624 and buried in Northchapel 2 March 1633. Robert married Elizabeth no baptisms appear in the few surviving parish records for children of Robert and Elizabeth. From his mothers will 1621 he received the sum of 40 shillings and a cow and to Elizabeth she bequeaths"a payne offlaxon sheets of clothe which is at the weavers"
Henry born 1589 in Garlands, married Mary, he also was bequeathed the same as Robert in his mothers will and likewise his wife Mary the same as Elizabeth.Henry died 1638 in Northchapel and buried 29 March 1638. Richard occupation farmer married Katherine Ticknor 10 Feb 1624.His mother in her will bequeathed to him "one pewter platter and one fourth of the residue ofher estate unbestowed after her debts have been paid".Of Richard and Katherme had any children the few parish records that survive reveal nothing. He died leaving a will but only his inventory and administration survive. His was probably a small farm judging from his stock and crops. He dies in early Feb 1637 during a epidemic, the Bishops Transcripts for that year show many more burials than normal. It was winter with frosts and possibly snow, with little or no crops in the ground. Most of his wheat, hay and straw was stored in the house and barn. His house appears to have four rooms and was sparcely and poorly furnished. Edward died in Kirdford 1645.In is parents wills his bequest was similar to his brother Richard. Thomas Belchamber my 8* GP was also born at Garlands and on the 24 June in Lurgashall he married Joan Mellersh.Thomas was bequeathed the same as his brothers in his parents wills. Thomas and Joan had two children Edward and John. The Children: Edward was bom in Northchapel and married Elizabeth, there are only two baptisms for children born to Edward and Elizabeth in the Northchapel Bishops Transcripts. The registors to 1716 are lost.In 1716 Northchapel became a parish in in its own right before this, it was a hamlet in the parish of Petworth. The transcripts do not cover all years. William Baptisted 2 March 1662 and Anne baptisted 28th Sept 1666 and buried 4th of May 1687.
John Belchamber my 7th GP married Anne??.They had four children who appear in the Bishops Transcipts for Northchapel, the registors to 1719 are lost.Their children are Joane baptisted 13th March 1665,John baptisted 20th 0ct 1672 and buried 7th May 1687,William baptisted 1st Dec 1678 and Edward baptisted 2 Dec 1668 my 6th GP. William Belchamber bom Garlands married Elizabeth Forman m Northchapel on the 6th Feb 1630.William seems to have gone to live in Kirdford with his sister Rose.Regarding his Parents will, see Richard and Edward.William and Elizabeth had three children William 1633,John 1635 andAnne 1640 The Children: William Belchamber bom 1633 1 do not know his wifes name but they had one child,Elizabeth was bom in Kirdford and baptisted llthMayl675. John Belchamber bom 1635 in Kirdford married Mary ??.John and Mary seem to have had four children, there may have been more but the registors at Kirdford to 1700 are not always readable. The children were as follows Willaim baptisted 30th March 1669,Joan Baptisted 14th Feb 1671 buried 1696,Elizabeth baptisted 31th March 1674 and John baptisted 23rd Jan 1675.
Robert and Constance's youngest son John Belchamber bom Garlands,Northchapel 1600 married Alyce ?? John was a yeoman farmer and the last Belchamber to have to copyhold of Garlands. After his death his daughter Elizabeth Baker inherited and stayed in the Baker family until the Earl of Egremont purchased Garlands in 1820.His mothers Will 1621 "to john my youngest sone the heir of my house and land one bedstead standing in the parlour and all that belong unto it a cupboard a table and bench and stowing in the hall,a long table a frame and a chest standing in the parlour to tablecloths to the table two bedsteads and a chest standing in the supper chamber,??? A iron cauldron a trivet and a dropping panne a great brass pott which I will to youngest son" The Children: Mary bom 1630 Northchapel and buried 6 Sept 1630 also Northchapel. John Belchamber died 1630 Northchapel and buried 5th Oct 1630. Elizabeth Belchamber married Richard Baker a yeoman farmer from Northchapel.Richard Baker was the husband of Elizabeth Belchamber and became the next copyholder of Garlands through the right of his wife, the only surviving child of John and Alyce Belchamber, although there may have been another daughter jane King.Elizabeth died leaving Garlands to her son John Bakerin 1671. The Bakers owned Garlands until 1820.Elizabeth and John's children were John baptisted 17th Oct 1661,William baptisted 21st Feb 1666 and James baptisted 25th July 1669. Anne Belchamber bom Northchapel 1638 and buried 19th Sept 1638, also at Northchapel. Jane Belchamber born Garlands,Northchapel. From the Will of John Belchamber.Good administered by Jane King, alias Belchamber, his daughter. This is a brief account of the early Belchambers from the information I have, hopefully I will be adding to this over the years. If you found it a bit confusing below is a family tree to help you
Thanks to my cousin Margaret Zietzke from Australia for her ongoing help and research into the Belchambers at Garlands
